| History of the Coastal Motion Band… The Coastal Motion Band started in the fall of 2001, playing for a squadron reunion at the Norfolk Naval Base. Through several personnel changes, they began playing small clubs such as Okey Dokey, Blarneystone Pub, Jerry’s and R Bar. However, the horn bands such as Bill Deal’s Rhondels, Chairman of the Board, and Band of Oz was of great influence since the 70’s. After re-grouping, we found a group of talented and committed musicians. Where have we played… The current group has played at Mitty’s in Newport News, the Longboard Surfing Championship in Virginia Beach, The Relay for Life Cancer Society in Chesapeake, and the Knotts Island Peach Festival. The Coastal Motion Band has also played Beach Street USA throughout the summer of 2006 in Virginia Beach, as well as several private parties, graduations and weddings. They also played regularly at Kimbels, 9th and Atlantic in Virginia Beach. Other venues included playing at the Suffolk National Guard Armory for Interstate Auction of Suffolk in which over there were over 400 in attendance, The Nansemond River Golf Course for The Western Tidewater Regional Jail, Outdoor Resorts of Virginia with our Sandbridge fans, as well as the Cavalier Motel Beach Club featuring the Virginia Beach Rescue Squad. The Coastal Motion Band has also played at Footers Sports Pub, the Cavalier Yacht and Golf Club, the Cypress Point Country Club, Steppin Out in Virginia Beach, 31st Street in Virginia Beach, James City County Fair in Williamsburg, Sunset Beach Resort in Cape Charles, Holiday Inn Portsmouth, The Pungo Strawberry Festival, The Chesapeake Jubilee, The Cape Charles Chamber of Commerce, Trav-L-Park in Virginia Beach and Oyster Alley in Hampton. Coastal Motion Band also entertained an audience of close to 2,000 at Yorktown's Shaggin On the Riverwalk. Their style of Beach music, Oldies, R&B, Motown and Blues delights audiences of all ages. Jimmy Byrum started playing drums at the age of 12 with several friends. In 1972, he began playing with a group called The Yellow Jackets. This band performed a variety of country and rock songs. He also played with Nightwatch, which played Rock & Roll and Blues, and the group The Chessman, which played a variety of R&B and Motown throughout the seventies. Jim has also frequently sat in with many local bands the past several years. In the summer of 2005, he played with the Showstoppers, a beach music band out of Nags Head. This encouraged him to whole-heartedly promote his own group, the Coastal Motion Band, in playing the kind of music he enjoys, beach music. |

Raised on classical and choral music by parents who were singers, Kevin Yoder has been around music his whole life. He played violin in the elementary school orchestra and then switched to trumpet. Through junior and senior high school, he played baritone horn in the school band, as well as trombone in the jazz band. Picking up an acoustic guitar about 20 years ago, he taught himself how to play. He started playing bass guitar about 10 years ago when his church worship band needed a bass player. Now he can be found most Sunday mornings playing for his local church band and during the week for the Coastal Motion Band as their bass player and backup vocalist. |
